What are the Requirements To receive an Accreditation

Achieving accreditation from the American Association for Laboratory Accreditation (A2LA) involves meeting several key requirements to demonstrate a laboratory’s competence and adherence to international standards. The primary areas of focus include:

1. Compliance with International Standards: Laboratories must conform to relevant internationally recognized standards, such as ISO/IEC 17025 for testing and calibration laboratories. This standard outlines general requirements for the competence, impartiality, and consistent operation of laboratories.

2. Quality Management System: Implementing a robust quality management system is essential. This includes documented procedures and policies that cover aspects like sample identification, equipment calibration, organizational structure, roles, and responsibilities. Regular internal audits should be conducted to assess compliance and identify areas for improvement.

3. Personnel Competence: Laboratory personnel must possess the necessary education, training, and experience to perform specific tests or calibrations. Ongoing training and professional development are crucial to maintain and enhance competence.

4. Testing and Calibration Methods: Laboratories are required to validate and document their testing and calibration methods to ensure accuracy. Proper procedures must be in place for receiving, handling, and storing samples to prevent contamination or degradation.

5. Equipment and Measurement Traceability: All equipment should be properly calibrated, maintained, and traceable to relevant standards. This ensures the reliability and accuracy of test and calibration results.

6. Measurement Uncertainty: Laboratories must estimate and report measurement uncertainty to confirm the reliability of their results. This involves understanding the factors that contribute to uncertainty and quantifying their impact.

7. Proficiency Testing: Participation in proficiency testing is required to demonstrate competence. A2LA publishes proficiency testing requirements applicable to all fields of testing and calibration.

8. Adherence to A2LA Policies: Compliance with A2LA-specific policies is mandatory. These policies cover areas such as the use of A2LA accredited status, measurement traceability, proficiency testing, and general requirements.

The accreditation process involves a thorough assessment by A2LA to ensure that all these requirements are met. Maintaining accreditation requires ongoing compliance and periodic reassessments to confirm continued adherence to the standards.
